Biking in the Rain

It can be tricky to bike in traffic, especially when it isn't warm, dry and overcast. The past few days' weather has proved challenging for me to muster up strength, get adequately dressed and brave the storm. Consequently, I did not make it out to Tweed Ride 2013 nor to Oak Bay Bike Festival. But this morning, I put on my big girl panties and dressed us in our rain gear to head out to play. Our destination was about a mile and a half away, I did not bite off more than I could chew. There was a break in the clouds and the sun peeked out to bid us good morning. We played at the Rec center's gym on their tricyles, in the bouncy castle and with other toys for a bit more than an hour. We stopped at the grocery store to pick up junk food. Outside, the torrents fell. Gulp. I paid, loaded up the bike and again, the rain eased up. It was a nice easy and rewarding trip.

What tips do you have for cycling in the rain? Do you wear a poncho? Do you have a merino wool base layer? Are you a "I'm gonna get wet anyway"-bicyclist who throws caution to the wind? Or do you hide indoors: home, car, bus, subway?
